This (a gold–mercury amalgam) was the original meaning of ormolu. The mercury was driven off in a kiln, leaving behind a gold coating. The term is now used more loosely; it can also mean an alloy of copper and zinc (sometimes with the addition of tin) used for the same purpose, or any gilt metal or imitation gold.
